Impact of Digital Advertising on Political Campaigns
Impact of Digital Advertising on Political Campaigns
Political campaigns
enable candidates to communicate their message directly to voters and shape the
political discourse. By utilizing diverse media platforms, candidates can
effectively target audiences that may have previously been disengaged from the
political process. Advertising allows them to establish their identity,
emphasize significant matters, and draw attention to the weaknesses of their
rivals. Correspondence to editors, news or feature pieces, editorial
commentary, or responses to editorials in a regularly published newspaper,
magazine, radio, or television broadcast that typically does not require
payment for the printed space or broadcast time is not categorized under
political advertising. However, political campaigns involve various activities
such as rallies, debates, fundraisers, canvassing, engaging with constituents,
and engaging in physical contact with infants. These aspects have been integral
to political campaigns since William McKinley's 1896 presidential campaign,
which introduced a systematic and well-organized approach to running for the
presidency and is considered the first "modern" campaign in history.
Historically,
newspapers, direct mail, radio, and television served as the mediums for
political advertisements. Social media, being a recent addition to the realm of
political communication, possesses certain characteristics that set it apart
from previous forms of media. Similar to newspapers and cable television
channels, there is virtually no restriction on the number of social media sites
one can operate to advertise their political narratives. Some of the most
prominent platforms used in the modern political environment include Facebook
(including its subsidiaries WhatsApp and Instagram), Google (including its
subsidiary YouTube), and Twitter. All these platforms have impacted political
advertising in various ways, as illustrated below.
Efficient Targeting of
Voters
Political campaigns
involve strategic planning and effectively targeting the appropriate voting
demographic with tailored messages. Targeting is an integral aspect of strategy
development in all forms of advertising. Digital advertising enables
politicians to have the ability to acquire and scrutinize engagement data in
the platforms and determine the appropriate campaign message conveyed to the
appropriate demographic. Social media platforms make targeting easier with
minimal or negligible expenses to the campaign. Furthermore, politicians now
possess the capability to perceive and comprehend people's responses and
viewpoints about policy proposals and visions on their Facebook and Twitter
pages. Therefore, digital media has become beneficial for enhancing the
effectiveness of targeting in political campaigns.
Platforms for Engagement
and Conversations
Social networking
platforms have also developed as crucial arenas for engaging in political
debates and conversations and organizing civic-minded activities at both local
and national levels in the United States. According to a recent survey
conducted by Pew
Research, more than 50% of
Americans have engaged in political or socially-oriented activities on social
media over the last year. In contrast to traditional media channels, digital
media engagements have grown more accessible to regular individuals in terms of
both creation and consumption. Even users with little knowledge can
successfully participate and create content online. Through these comments,
politicians can design their campaign ads by incorporating the audience's needs
that they most complain about. As a result, through association, politicians
can produce a compelling ad that aligns with the audience's needs and gain more
supporters.
Quick, Cheap, and Easy
Dissemination of Political Campaign Ads
Digital media has
created less distinction between information generation and consumption, as
users now can create personal blogs and podcasts, document their everyday
activities as desired, and share and upload movies on YouTube. Based on these
platforms' widespread popularity and excitement, users have largely accepted
media production and consumption merging. As a result, digital media platforms
allow people to widely share political ad videos once posted by the candidates
across various platforms. For instance, an ad posted on YouTube can be easily
and freely shared and downloaded by various people on different social
platforms, making it reach a wide audience.
Besides, digital media
has effectively overcome the limitations of place and time, allowing users to
communicate instantly through text chats, voice chats, and video calls. In
addition to overcoming the conventional obstacle of geographic distance,
digital media have enabled immediate communication and users' ability to
transform their perception of place. In political campaigns, this would involve
the capacity to obtain information or engage in forums that previously would
have been inaccessible owing to geographical distance and temporal limitations.
Therefore, by utilizing digital media technology, individuals within a
community can convene online to engage in conversations on important subjects,
exchange thoughts, and articulate their personal and collective perspectives on
mutually relevant matters. As a result, these platforms have the potential to
enhance community colloquia, allowing users to connect with both professionals
and non-experts to exchange diverse or similar perspectives through these
virtual connections.
In conclusion, the way information is
exchanged and consumed in the present digital media environment has shifted
considerably from traditional formats to more flexible and personalized
platforms linked with digital power or mobile culture. Through the smart use of
social networks, political candidates use these platforms to facilitate their
campaigns and attract potential voters.
Hi Raegan, I really enjoyed reading your blog post this week. I think this is such an important topic with the upcoming election season. I definitely think as technology advances, more and more politicians will use digital advertising to aid in campaigns. As you mentioned in your post, this is a great way to gain supporters, gain financial contributions, and spread their messages. We learned about AOC who was successful with this, and in research for my blog a few weeks back, I also learned that GA Senator John Ossoff also owed much success to this.
ReplyDeleteHi Eliza,
DeleteI appreciate your time and effort in reading my blog post and expressing your comments. I'm pleased to learn that you found it enjoyable, and I value your observations regarding the importance of digital advertising in the approaching election periods. It is intriguing to observe the growing integration of technology into political campaigns. The achievements of individuals such as AOC and Senator John Ossoff exemplify the profound impact of these internet techniques. Thank you once more for interacting with my blog!
Hey! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the impact of digital advertising on political campaigns. It's fascinating how the landscape has evolved over time. Two questions that popped into my mind:
ReplyDeleteWith the rise of digital advertising and its efficient targeting capabilities, do you think there's a risk of creating echo chambers where candidates primarily engage with audiences that already align with their views? How might this impact the diversity of perspectives in political discourse?
You mention the accessibility of digital media engagements compared to traditional channels. Considering this accessibility, do you see a potential downside in terms of misinformation spreading rapidly through these platforms during political campaigns? How can this challenge be addressed effectively?
I look forward to your thoughts on this, if you have the time! Great blogging, I've enjoyed reading.
Hey Kerrie,
DeleteThank you for taking your time to read my post. I’m glad you enjoyed reading it. I think with social media, it is possible to foster echo chambers easily because of the targeting features in these sites. By employing digital advertising to selectively reach audiences according to their preferences, interests, and past online activities, political candidates risk strengthening preexisting beliefs rather than exposing consumers to various viewpoints. This tendency can contribute to the development of echo chambers, wherein social media users are predominantly exposed to information and opinions by their pre-established perspectives. Within these echo chambers, individuals may have a reduced likelihood of encountering opposing opinions or other perspectives, which eliminates the diversity of thinking in political discussions. Besides, polarization is another key impact of these echo chambers. I believe that their influence of the variety of viewpoints in political discussions can be substantial. Targeting and tailoring digital advertising towards ideologically aligned audiences by candidates and political entities could result in heightened polarization and fragmentation of the political environment. This polarization might hinder constructive debate and compromise since individuals have no exposure to the ideologies of conflicting perspectives.
In terms of misinformation, yes, I do see potential downside of the increasing engagement in social media. In one of my blogs titled, “The Real Effects of Social Media on Politics,” I have elaborately examined misinformation as one of the major impacts. To reduce these hazards, individuals must acknowledge the possibility of echo chambers and proactively pursue various information sources. Furthermore, regulators, tech businesses, and advertisers should consider ethical norms and practices that encourage a fair and comprehensive flow of ideas in digital environments. Facilitating media literacy and fostering critical thinking abilities can be crucial in assisting folks in navigating the digital terrain and actively engaging with diverse viewpoints. To mitigate the potential detrimental impacts of echo chambers in the digital era, it is crucial to cultivate an appreciation for the significance of varied perspectives in political discussions.
Hey Raegan, I definitely think that this is a very important especially with next year's election coming up. Digital advertising has grown so much in the past year. It is a great way to gain followers especially from younger voters or potential voters in the future. The politician needs to be careful with how they do their digital advertising because it can be easy to not put full effort into the advertisements because they are online.

ReplyDeleteHi Raegen! Great blog post! Digital advertising is becoming so important as social media continues to expand especially in the upcoming 2024 election. It do think with its growing presence, politicians needs to become even more aware on the impact their digital footprint as and just how lasting those effects will be felt. The danger of words being twisted and misinformation spreading is higher than ever and politicians needs to be cognizant of that.
ReplyDeleteThe digital age has blurred the distinction between information production and consumption. This has resulted in a shift away from traditional content distribution channels, such as newspapers and television, to digital channels, such as social media. This has changed the way we consume and interact with media, leading to a greater focus on user-generated content. This has given rise to a new type of content producer, the influencer, who is able to spread messages quickly to large audiences. This shift has revolutionized the way companies market their products and brands, as well as the way consumers interact with media.
